GAMECOCK BARRACKS
Demolition of “Bombproof” munitions hangar
This project consisted of the demolition of a redundant hangar within a live MOD facility.
The hangar is understood to have been used as a Munitions Store during WW2, and was constructed in heavily reinforced concrete which exceeded 1.0m thick in places.
The only area not heavily reinforced was the roof which was confusing at first. Further investigations revealed the thought behind this was that were an explosion to occur, the blast and resultant debris would go up and not outwards. Our concern was that we had in excess of 7500m2 of Asbestos Cement sheeting on a structure some 16m high.
Utilising the existing timber boarding underlining, and an elaborate system of safety netting, the sheeting was removed by hand from above. A total exceeding 200 tonnes was removed from site.
Once the roof coverings, along with the various other Asbestos based products, had been removed, a Structural Engineer was employed to appraise the stripped structure, and a demolition sequence was designed.
A 21m high-reach excavator was employed to carry out a controlled progressive collapse of the structure, with three standard excavators following behind processing the arisings simultaneously.
The whole project was completed one week earlier than the 10 week programme demanded.
